Born in Bradford, Yorkshire, in Q1-1900 [Bradford 9b:58] to William and Edith WHITAKER ( née SMITH) of 132/134 Bolton Road, Bradford.

1901 census...Thomas [1] seems to be with his grandparents Thomas and Mary SMITH at 875 Bolton Road, Bradford. His parents, William [26] a grocer born Bradford and mother Edith [26] also born Bradford, were at 132-134 Bolton Road, Bradford.

1911 census...Thomas [11] was at 13 Buckingham Street, Bradford with his father William [36] a grocer's assistant born Bradford, his mother Edith [36] born Bradford, and his brother Walter [9] born Bradford. 2 of the three boarders are his grandfather Thomas and Elias SMITH.

By his name on the Astley Club plaque he must have been a stableman in Newmarket at some time.


"Soldiers Died gives his death as on 23rd December 1918 and residence Newmarket.

He enlisted in Ipswich. He was the only man from this battalion killed on 22nd October 1918. The war diary states: "A general cleaning up. From 22nd to 26th October the days were devoted to re-organising - cleaning up and general and specialist training"



No known grave - Thomas is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium- Ref:panels 14-17 and 162-162A
and also on the plaque in the New Astley Club, Fred Archer Way, Newmarket
